Purpose

The Shurmer family exists to glorify Jesus Christ.

We do this by:

sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

Values

Joy

Joy to the Shurmers, the Lord has come

Psalm 16:11 In your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
2 Cor 9:7 …for God loves a cheerful giver.
Phil 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.

Patience

Patience, endurance, and long-suffering. Like God.

Isaiah 64:4 no eye has seen a God besides you, who acts for those who wait for him.
Romans 2:7 To those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, God will give eternal life.

Communication

Words are powerful. We ought to be clear and encouraging. Listening and speaking well.

James 3:10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Col 4:6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Humor

Mostly laughing at ourselves

Proverbs 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
Eph 5:4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.

Charity

Good stewards of God's varied gifts. Not just material giving, but charitable lives.

Acts 20:35 It is more blessed to give than to receive.
2 Cor 9:7 for God loves a cheerful giver.

Education

God wrote a book

Romans 12:2 Be transformed by the renewal of your mind
1 Timothy 2:7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.
2 Cor 10:5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
Proverbs 16:16 How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.
Proverbs 18:15 An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

Presence

Be here , now

1 Corinthians 7:17 Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches.
Psalm 46:10 Be still and know that I am God.
Ecclesiates 4:6 Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.

Simplicity

Simple and purposeful

1 Tim 2:2 Lead a peacefully and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way
